Participants had incredible insights for us and each other on the power of history in designing the future. One tenet of the BlackSpace manifesto is to “RECKON WITH THE PAST TO BUILD THE FUTURE: Meaningfully acknowledge the histories, injustice, innovations, and victories of spaces and places before new work begins. Reckon with the past as a means of healing, building trust, and deepening understanding of self and others.” You can find out more about BlackSpace here.
The workshop and conference took place at Weeksville Heritage Center, a museum dedicated to preserving the history of Weeksville, Brooklyn, one of many free African-American communities in 19th century America. Learn more about Weeksville and see upcoming workshops here.
